Jad Melki & Sarah Mallat

Jad Melki is the Director of the Media Studies Program and an Assistant Professor of Journalism and Media Studies at the American University of Beirut. He is co-chairperson of the Media and Digital Literacy Academy of Beirut (MDLAB) and visiting faculty at Johns Hopkins University, USA, and the Salzburg Academy for Media and Global Change, Austria.

Sarah Mallat is a researcher and instructor of media and digital literacy in the Media Studies program at the American University of Beirut. She is also a visiting faculty member of the Salzburg Academy on Media and Global Change, Austria.

Digital Activism: Efficacies and Burdens of Social Media for Civic Activism

In a comprehensive study of social media usage among social movement organizations in Lebanon, Jad Melki and Sarah Mallat investigate the efficacy of digital technology as a tool for activism. The authors find that while social media platforms offer a number of perceived benefits to activism work, there remain significant obstacles that manifest both on and offline.
