This study conducts a semiotic analysis of political cartoons produced by Palestinian and Israeli cartoonists in response to the Gaza War, covering the period from October 7, 2023, to the first anniversary of the conflict in October 2024. Through a purposive sample of 19 cartoons published by four leading cartoonists—two from each side—on the Cartoon Movement platform, the research investigates the symbolic and ideological frameworks embedded within visual narratives.

The findings highlight the significant impact of sociopolitical, cultural, and ideological contexts on the visual representations of the conflict. Palestinian cartoonists frequently employed powerful national symbols such as the Palestinian flag, the keffiyeh, scales of justice, and imagery of destruction (e.g., demolished homes, Israeli missiles) to underscore themes of victimhood, resistance, and injustice. Conversely, Israeli cartoonists depicted national defense and political figures—especially the soldier as a symbol of statehood and Yahya Sinwar as a representation of Hamas—using metaphors such as the crocodile to critique perceived deception, referencing the myth of “crocodile tears.”

Both groups strategically utilized facial expressions, clothing elements, and visual metaphors to communicate layered meanings, revealing divergent narratives that reinforce each side’s ideological stance. The study underscores the role of political cartoons as potent instruments of discursive construction in digital media spaces during times of conflict.

التحليل السيميولوجي لرسوم الكاريكاتير السياسي الفلسطيني والإسرائيلي للحرب على غزة عام 2023 عبر منصات الكاريكاتير الرقمية

الملخص

تسعى الدراسة إلى رصد كيفية تمثيل رسامي الكاريكاتير الفلسطينيين والإسرائيليين لأحداث الحرب على قطاع غزة منذ 7 أكتوبر عام 2023 حتى نهاية أكتوبر 2024، في إطار مرور الذكرى السنوية الأولى على أحداث الحرب؛ حيث حللت الدراسة كيفيا سيميائية رسوم الكاريكاتير السياسي لعينة عمدية قوامها 19 رسمًا كاريكاتيريًا لاثنين من الرسامين الفلسطينيين واثنين من الرسامين الإسرائيليين أصحاب الأرشيف الأكبر على منصة Cartoon Movement، وخلصت الدراسة إلى بروز تأثير الإطار المُجتمعي، والثقافي، والسياسي، وكذلك الانتماء الأيديولوجي للرسّامين الذين يمثلون طرفي صراع طويل الأمد بين الفلسطينيين والإسرائيليين؛ حيث كشفت الدراسة عن استعانة الرسامين الفلسطينيين بعدد من الرموز والعلامات السيميائية التي أبرزها العلم والوشاح الفلسطيني وميزان العدل، وحُطام المنازل والصواريخ الإسرائيلية، بينما ركّز الرسّامون الإسرائيليون على الجندي بصفته رمزا لإسرائيل، والسنوار رمزا لحركة حماس، والتمساح في إشارة لحركة حماس وخداعها، من خلال توظيف أسطورة دموع التماسيح؛ بغرض إبراز الدور السلبي لحركة حماس، كما وظف الرسّامون الفلسطينيون والإسرائيليون تعبيرات الوجه والملابس للمساعدة في توصيل الرسائل الصريحة والكامنة المُراد توصيلها للمُتلقي.
