This study examines the use of conceptual metaphors—ontological, orientational, and structural—in the media discourse on the Syrian crisis, as presented on the websites of RT Arabic and BBC Arabic. By analyzing the metaphorical language embedded in news coverage, the research explores how these cognitive frames are mobilized to either reinforce or challenge dominant political ideologies, ultimately shaping public understanding and perception of the conflict.

A purposive sample of 51 news articles published between December 8 and 31, 2024, serves as the basis for the semantic analysis. The findings reveal distinct editorial strategies between the two outlets. RT Arabic predominantly constructs the Syrian government as a victim of Western conspiracies, using metaphors that underscore themes of resistance, sovereignty, and national restoration. In contrast, BBC Arabic emphasizes humanitarian suffering and civilian casualties, deploying metaphors that frame the Syrian regime as a perpetrator of violence and human rights violations. These contrasting metaphorical frameworks reflect broader ideological alignments and contribute to divergent international narratives surrounding the Syrian conflict.

The study highlights the pivotal role of conceptual metaphors in shaping media discourse during wartime, illustrating how language becomes a strategic tool in the construction of political meaning.

الاستعارات المفاهيمية في الخطاب الإعلامي حول الحروب: تحليل دلالات التغطية الإخبارية للأزمة السورية في موقعي روسيا اليوم وبي بي سي بالعربية

الملخص

تهدف الدراسة إلى تحليل الاستعارات المفاهيمية بأنواعها، كالاستعارات الأنطولوجية، والاتجاهية، والبنيوية، تلك التي تُستخدم في التغطية الإعلامية للأزمة السورية على موقعي "روسيا اليوم" و"بي بي سي بالعربية"، ورصد طرق توظيف الاستعارات المفاهيمية بأنواعها داخل السياق الإعلامي لتعزيز أو تقويض الأيديولوجيات السياسية السائدة، وبيان دلالاتها في التأثير على التصورات العامة حول الأحداث الجارية، من خلال تحليل "51" مقالة من الموقعين خلال الفترة من ٨ إلى ٣١ ديسمبر 2024، وتوصلت الدراسة التحليلية إلى أن هناك تباينًا كبيرًا في التغطية الإعلامية لكل من موقعي "روسيا اليوم" و"بي بي سي بالعربية" في عرض وتقديم الأزمة السورية؛ حيث تميل "روسيا اليوم" إلى تصوير الحكومة السورية على أنها ضحية لمؤامرات غربية، مركّزة على سردية استعادة الأمن والسيادة الوطنية، بينما تركز "بي بي سي بالعربية" على إبراز المعاناة الإنسانية والانتهاكات التي يتعرض لها المدنيون؛ مما يسهم في تشكيل رأي عام دولي يدين النظام السوري، وهذا التوجه ينعكس بوضوح في استخدام الاستعارات في كل من الوسيلتين.
