Public Culture and Islam in Modern Egypt

Arab Media & Society held lecture "Public Culture and Islam in Modern Egypt" from in AUC's Mohamed Shafik Gabr Lecture Hall on Wednesday, February 8. 2017. Hatsuki Aishima, Associate Professor at the National Museum of Ethnography in Osaka, Japan discussed the life and media representations of former Grand Imam of Al Azhar, Abdel-Halim Mahmoud. Aishima, who holds a PhD from St. Antony's College, University of Oxford, has recently published a book of the same  name Public Culture and Islam in Modern Egypt: Media, Intellectuals and Society  (I.B. Tauris, 2016). The event was hosted by Managing Editor Sarah El-Shaarawi with Ian Morrison (AUC Sociology) acting as discussant. Aishima is also a contributor to the latest issue of Arab Media & Society on "Media and Culture" (Winter/Spring 2017)
