April 30, 2015 – Press Syndicate warns against media legislation that has not been referred to the Union Egyptian Press Syndicate Chairman Yehia Kalash warned in a press release against legislation of press laws or projects that are issued by formal or informal entities. Kalash stated that the National Committee for Press and Media Legislation is the only entity entitled to issue laws or decisions concerning press in Egypt.

April 29, 2015 - Journalists demand murder case of Mayada Ashraf be reopened 150 journalists filed a petition with the office of the General Prosecutor Hesham Barakat. The journalists demanded that the murder case of fellow journalist Mayada Ashraf, an El Dostour newspaper reporter who was killed on 28 March 2014 covering clashes in Ain Shams district, be reopened.

April 28, 2015 – Siza Nabarawi Center for Women Rights launches Media Women’s Empowerment Initiative The center, in collaboration with a number of journalists, launched a media initiative under the name “A Spot for Change”. The media initiative will focus on success stories of women in order to challenge the traditional, sexist, and victimizing stereotypes of women in Egyptian media.

April 26, 2015 – Media City Chairman: Decision to dismiss 52 drug-using workers final Osama Heikel, Egyptian Media Production City Chairman affirmed that his decision to dismiss 52 media city workers. Heikel confirmed that his decision is in accordance with the city policy. The decision was made after a sudden drug test was performed on all media city workers.

April 25, 2015 – National security postpones investigation of 5 El Masry El Youm journalists Press Syndicate Chairman Yehia Kalash announced that the Egyptian national security office has postponed investigation into five El Masry El Youm journalists who published a report documenting police violations. The investigation was scheduled to begin on Sunday; it has been postponed indefinitely.

April 23, 2015 – Press Syndicate Stands in Support of El Masry El Youm Journalists El Husseiny Abou Daif committee at the press syndicate organized a protest stand on Thursday by its stairs in opposition to the practices of the ministry of interior. The stand is a response to a press release by the ministry criticizing the recent report documenting police violations entitled “Holes in the Official Uniform”.

April 22, 2015 – Islam El Beheiry announces end of his TV Show Media anchor and Islamic researcher Islam El Beheiry announced the end of his TV show “With Islam”, which was being aired on Egyptian satellite channel “El Kahera Wal Nas”. El Baheiry made the announcement on his Facebook page. He wrote that the decision was due to problems with the channel and that freedom of expression in Egypt is in a major state of deterioration. Al Azhar, the main Islamic institution in Egypt, recently attacked El Baheiry, accusing him of defaming Islam.

April 21, 2015 – Maspero Chairman mourns El Abnoudi and broadcasts his best works Essam El-Amir, chairman of the Egyptian Radio and Television Union (Maspero), expressed his deepest sorrow for the death of renowned Egyptian poet Abdel Rahman El Abnoudi who passed away on Tuesday. Honoring El Abnoudi’s poetic contribution, El Amir ordered a modification in Maspero programming in order to show El Abnoudi’s best works for radio and television.

April 20, 2015 – Media Gag on “Port Said Massacre” case until final verdict reached For the second time, the Port Said criminal court has handed down death sentences to 11 defendants in the Port Said Massacre based on first degree murder, intimidation and display of force charges. The court prevented the defendants and their families from attending the hearing while the defense committee prevented journalists from photographing the defendants.

April 20, 2015 – Former Maspero chairman prosecuted for damaging 25 January Revolution records Cairo Criminal Court has started the prosecution of Ahmed Ismail, Former Chairman of Maspero. He is charged with damaging the records of 25th of January revolution. Ismail was sent to court after evidence was found of him giving orders to damage 6 CDs containing records of 25thof January events and clashes.

April 20, 2015 – Former Media Minister Anas El Feky prosecuted for squandering Maspero money The trial of Anas El Feky, former Egyptian Media Minister and Abdel Latif El Meniawy, Former Head of News Sector, began today at Cairo Criminal Court. The trial is taking place at the Supreme Court House. The defendants are charged with squandering public money. These charges represent losses estimated at 360 million Egyptian pounds.

April 19, 2015 – Islam El Beheiry TV Show Ongoing An “El Kahera Walnas” satellite channel source announced that “With Islam”, the television show hosted by media anchor and Islamic researcher Islam El Beheiry, will continue to be broadcast. They declared no intention of removing it from the channel’s programming. Al Azhar, Egypt’s main Islamic institution has recently attacked el Beheiry’s show, over claims of defaming Islamic religion.

April 16, 2015 – Media gag on Mubarak’s sons’ trial in “stock market” case
Police academy security forces prevented journalists and media representatives from attending the stock market manipulation trial of Gamal and Alaa Mubarak. The media gag is not based on an official media gag order released by the court.

April 16, 2015 – Prime Minister Mahlab authorizes new appointments in Maspero Egyptian Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab authorized new high caliber appointments in the Egyptian Radio and Television Union (Maspero). The new appointments are part of the Egyptian government’s plan to restructure the Maspero building and its employees.

April 15, 2015 – Press Syndicate demands transfer of detained journalists to Tora prison Yehia Kalash, Chairman of the Egyptian Press Syndicate announced on Tuesday that the syndicate sent a letter to the ministry of interior asking the ministry to transfer all detained journalists to Tora prison. The syndicate also demanded providing medical care for a detained journalist suffering from deteriorating eyesight.

April 15, 2015 – Husseini Abou Deif School to Open Thursday An inauguration of a school carrying the name of the journalist El Husseini Abou Deif will take place on Thursday April 16 in Sohag governorate. A delegation from the Egyptian Press Syndicate and prime minister’s office will attend the inauguration. El Husseini Abou Deif was killed while covering protests outside the presidential palace against ex-president Mohammed Morsi in what was called the “Itihadia Events”.

April 14, 2015 – Media Gag on Media City Explosions Security forces prevented journalists from gaining access to the location of the electricity tower explosions that targeted the media city. Security also asked the media not to cover the accident after giving instructions to fix electricity at the media city so that channels may resume broadcasting.

April 14, 2015 – 8 bombs found in Media City destroying 3 electricity towers The city of 6th of October witnessed 3 explosions resulting in the destruction of 3 electricity towers providing power to the media city and the entire industrial zone. The explosion took place at the same time as Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab’s visit to lay the foundation for a cassation court to be built nearby.

April 9, 2015 – Maspero Reconstruction Plan: 12 sectors to be reduced to 4 A government official announced that an initial plan to reconstruct Egyptian Radio and Television Union (Maspero) is complete and under examination by the ministry of planning in preparation for its implementation. The plan includes decreasing the number of Maspero sections from 12 to 4 sectors. Some workers expressed their concern over the new plan for fear of losing their jobs.

April 1, 2015 – Maspero Committee formed to improve news sector in effort to match satellite channels Essam El-Amir, Chief of Egyptian Radio and Television Union (Maspero), gave orders to form a committee of media officials that will be responsible for improving news programs and services of Maspero. The committee is being formed in an attempt to compete with private satellite channels.

April 1, 2015 – Egyptian press adopts sectarian tones following air strikes against Houthis in Yemen (Opinion) Some newspapers in Egypt started using sectarian tones on their front pages in support of Egypt’s air strikes against Houthis in Yemen. During ex President Mohamed Morsi’s rule, the sectarian religious media tones on Egyptian TV and newspapers were the main cause for killings against Shi’as and Christians in Egypt. The return of the sectarian tone may serve as a serious indication of the state of media in Egypt and its objectivity at the present time.

April 1, 2015 – Media Anchor Islam El Beheiry to be prosecuted in response to a complaint by Al Azhar Islam El Beheiry a TV media anchor and Islamic researcher who hosts a TV program in which he discusses the sources of Islamic religion and its credibility will be prosecuted for blasphemy. Al Azhar, the government-run Islamic institution in Egypt, has filed the case.
