Debunking COVID-19 Fake News on Arabic Fact-Checking Websites: An Analytical Study (Arabic)

The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed an information crisis, labeled an “Infodemic”. This study explores the methodology of debunking fake news related to the pandemic on independent Arabic fact-checking websites. The study’s results are derived from a textual and visual analysis of the content related to COVID-19 that have been published on two major Arabic fact-checking websites, Fatabyyano and Da Begad, between December 31, 2019 and October 31, 2020, paired with qualitative content analysis of the polices of both websites. The study concluded that the independent fact-checking websites have produced a new genre of investigative journalism, performed by non-journalistic actors. These individuals play the role of gate-keepers of information online, constituting pressure groups that compel mass media outlets and users, in many cases, to apologize for fake news and correct it. These websites have professionally debunked and verified online fake news related to COVID-19, including conspiracy theories and pseudoscientific therapies disseminated mainly on social networking sites, putting public health at risk.
